Improving Physical Security in Your Work Area

Improving Physical Security in Your Work Area

If you’re trying to improve the physical security of your office or work area, read on for some great tips and information.

Depending on your industry, the idea of security could mean a lot of different things. In a hospital, security usually conjures thoughts of the team that keeps people safe from threats by monitoring access. In many offices, however, security is more than just the guard at the door. You need to be aware of threats from digital and physical sources that can risk the safety of everything from to protect intellectual property or trade secrets to the expensive materials and tools that you work with. If you’re trying to improve the physical security of your office or work area, read on for some great tips and information.

Is Physical Security Really That Big An Issue?

These days, there is always a lot of focus on cybersecurity, but there are still plenty of instances where someone lies or charms their way into a facility to steal important data, documents, or materials. If you don’t have physical security procedures in place that are clearly as important as your cyber security ones, your employees won’t realize the threats they’re allowing in. It seems nice to hold the door for that person running in the rain, but are you sure they are an employee? If they’re not, what might they be able to learn or uncover just by walking through the halls and looking over shoulders?

Protect From Threats Walking In

The best physical security defense is a good perimeter, usually an actual fence, but it may also include security cameras, motion sensors, employee badge controlled access, and more. You should also have a  thorough system for inventorying and monitoring access to business equipment like staff uniforms, computer equipment, and badges. You should also include employee training in your security strategy. Finally, be certain that there is a strong emergency plan and a capable individual to monitor and improve your physical security efforts.

Protect From Peeking Eyes

Since the internet is awash with threats that want to see, steal, or lock you out of your data, a large part of cybersecurity is devoted to protecting you from prying eyes. You also should protect from physical eyes as well, though. If you allow visitors in your building, make sure you don’t have any work stations visible from common areas like lounges or hallways. You could do this with mirrored glass or security louvres. You should also make sure that anywhere that you house confidential information, you severely limit access to.
